PLANO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Two women who were arrested near Waco and believed to be connected to the deaths of a two people at a home in Plano have now been charged with capital murder.

Plano police charged Cynthia Wingate, 29, and Carmen Moreno, 23, with capital murder as the two remain in the McLennan County Jail.

Police believe the two suspects are connected to the deaths of 71-year-old Theresa Coomes and 72-year-old Jimmy Farris in Plano. The two victims were found dead at a home in the 2300 block of Pebble Vale Drive late Sunday evening after the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office asked police to do a welfare check.

As deputies were searching the car, a second car being driven by Moreno pulled up to the scene. Authorities said Moreno was covered in blood when she approached deputies, saying she needed to get something from Wingate.

They were both arrested and still remain in the McLennan County Jail as police continue to investigate the deaths of the two Plano residents. The capital murder charges carried a bond of $750,000 each.

HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Attorneys for a man accused of fatally shooting a Houston officer said Monday that their client has a history of mental illness, as a judge ordered him to remain jailed without bond.

Arturo Solis, dressed in yellow jail clothing, said nothing during a short court hearing before state District Judge Danilo Lacayo.

Arturo Solis denied bond at hearing (KTRK-TV)

Solis is charged with capital murder in the shooting death Saturday of Sgt. Christopher Brewster.

Anthony Osso, one of Solis’ court-appointed attorneys, told reporters afterward that Solis cried during the hearing. Osso described Solis as quiet and said he didn’t appear to be an assertive individual.

Osso said Solis had been diagnosed as mentally ill when he was in the juvenile system, but he was still learning some of the specific details about his history with mental illness.

“We always ask that the public wait to hear all the facts in the case,” Osso said. “We’ve lost an officer, and that’s difficult for everybody. We as a society don’t like to see this kind of violence occur. I think facts will come out about Mr. Solis in the future and we’ll just see how it plays out.”

Solis’ father, Roberto Solis, told the Houston Chronicle his son showed signs of mental illness as a teenager and had armed himself recently after someone broke into his home.

John Brewer, one of the prosecutors handling the case for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, said he was not aware of any mental illnesses in Solis’ history.

Solis has several prior misdemeanor arrests, including for assault of a family member and burglary of a vehicle.

Brewer said the 32-year-old officer’s fatal shooting has been “devastating.”

Sgt. Christopher Brewster (Houston Police Department)

“All we can try to do is say a prayer for the family, keep them in our hearts and our minds and see that justice is done,” Brewer said.

Police officials said that Brewster was shot just before 6 p.m. Saturday as he was responding to a domestic violence report.

Police received a call from a female victim who said her boyfriend was assaulting her and that he was armed with two firearms. Police didn’t find the couple at the provided address, but Brewster spotted them three streets away on Houston’s east side.

According to a probable cause affidavit read in court Monday, Brewster got out of his vehicle and saw the woman pointing in the direction of Solis.

“The officer, according to the defendant, had both hands up, waving to the defendant as if to say hi,” Brewer said. “The officer did not have his weapon out, did not shoot at the defendant. At that time, the defendant pulled his gun and emptied his gun at or into the victim.”

Solis ran off but was captured a short time later at a nearby elementary school.

Police recovered both handguns that Solis had, one by the scene of the shooting and the other at the school.

Solis apparently made several statements after his arrest inquiring about Brewster, saying “something along the lines of, ‘Is he OK?’” according to the affidavit.

Solis also told police after his arrest that if people had come outside when he was fleeing, “he may have chosen to shoot them as well,” according to the affidavit.

Solis’ next court hearing is set for Feb. 12.

HOUSTON (CBSDFW.COM) – At least one bullet possibly penetrated Houston Police Department Sgt. Christopher Brewster’s bulletproof vest when he was shot and killed Saturday, according to a statement from Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, the Houston Chronicle reported Monday night.

Sgt. Christopher Brewster (Houston Police Department)

An expert will need to analyze the shooter’s ammunition to determine whether it was designed to penetrate that type of equipment, Acevedo stated.  The vest will also be examined to determine whether it performed to the manufacturer’s specifications, he said.

Arturo Solis is charged with capital murder in the shooting death.

Solis has several prior misdemeanor arrests, including for assault of a family member and burglary of a vehicle.

John Brewer, one of the prosecutors handling the case for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said the 32-year-old officer’s fatal shooting has been “devastating.”

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM)The body of Quincy Wyatt was found burned in a field in Dallas more than a week ago, now police have arrested 2 people who they say are responsible for his death.

Wyatt’s body was discovered on December 10, in the 8100 block of Mayforge Drive near Interstate-45, by a passerby. The 20-year-old’s body was inside a tarp that had been set on fire. The Dallas County Medical Examiner later determined Wyatt’s death was a homicide.

As police began investigating they learned there was a woman with Wyatt on the day he was killed. According to the arrest warrant for one of the suspects, the female witness and Wyatt went to the house of an acquaintance in the 4000 block of Maryland.

While inside the house the woman says she was assaulted by LaKevian Grant and Teilor Johnson. Grant is also accused of holding the woman at gunpoint while Wyatt was kidnapped.

Another witness outside the house told police they saw two men, wearing ski masks, force another man into the trunk of a car before shooting him, closing the trunk and driving away.

The warrant says the female witness was released after the car drove off.

Police have charged both Grant, 20, and Johnson, 19, with capital murder for playing “a role in the disappearance and murder of” Wyatt. Investigators say after the man and woman were arrested they each waved their rights and gave voluntary statements that linked them to Wyatt.

Both are being held in the Dallas County Jail on $600,000 bond each.

At least one of the accused, Grant, claims another man, who contacted him and offered money to help find Wyatt, is the actual murderer. Police haven’t said if they are looking for any additional suspects.

PLANO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – Two women accused in the November stabbing deaths of two Plano residents in their 70s have been indicted for capital murder.

Cynthia Wingate, 29, and Carmen Moreno, 23, were arrested on Interstate-35 near Waco on Nov. 17 after Wingate, who was in a separate vehicle, was pulled over.

Moreno later pulled up to the traffic stop while covered in blood and told police she needed to get something from Wingate. This, ultimately, led to her arrest.

After further investigation and finding knives (one of which was covered in blood), drugs, debit cards and medical documents inside the vehicle Wingate was driving, police connected the two women to the murders of Theresa Coomes, 71, and Jimmy Farris, 72.

The two victims were found stabbed to death inside Farris’ apartment in Plano in the 2300 block of Pebble Vale Drive.

It was reported that the two suspects were acquainted with Coomes and Farris and were at the apartment before the stabbings happened, according to the arrest affidavit.

According to an affidavit obtained by the Dallas Morning News, there was an alleged altercation between Farris and Moreno that led to her stabbing him with a knife. Moreno also allegedly stabbed Coomes in the throat after she threatened to call police, the affidavit stated.

According to the affidavit, Wingate was present during the two stabbings and knew what Moreno had done.

The exact relationship between between the suspects and the victims is not known and wasn’t made clear in the affidavit.

Wingate and Moreno were first booked into the McLennan County Jail but then later transferred to Collin County Jail.

Patrick Crusius Now Charged With Federal Hate Crimes For Shooting Rampage At El Paso Walmart

EL PASO, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/CNN) – The man accused of killing 22 people and injuring nearly two dozen more in a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas now faces federal hate crime charges as officials believe the attack was targeted towards the Hispanic community.

It was announced Thursday that Patrick Crusius faces 90 federal charges of hate crimes resulting in death, hate crimes involving an attempt to kill, use of a firearm to commit murder and in relation to a crime of violence, and use of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

The charges relate to the 22 people who were killed as well as 23 other victims who survived the Aug. 3 massacre — one of the nation’s deadliest shootings and the deadliest attack on Latinos in modern US history.

Crusius is accused of killing and harming the victims “because of the actual and perceived national origin of any person,” the indictment states.

Patrick Crusius mugshot (Credit: El Paso Police Department)

U.S. Attorney John F. Bash told reporters the indictment was a “significant step” toward seeking swift and certain justice for the victims and said it was “tremendously important” to citizens of the United States and Mexico.

“This attack deeply scarred this community,” Bash said.

The alleged shooter is expected to make his first appearance in federal court on Feb. 12.

Federal prosecutors said he could face death penalty on each of the charges linked to the people who were killed and up to life in prison for the charges involving the surviving victims.

Shortly after the shooting, federal authorities said they were treating the case as domestic terrorism but have not filed any charges against the alleged shooter until now. Since a person can’t be charged with domestic terrorism, law enforcement officials such as the FBI have to find related crimes such as murder, illegal weapons possession and hate crimes in order to arrest and charge suspects.

Eric Dreiband, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights division of the Department of Justice, said Thursday the alleged shooter tried to terrorize an entire community and the attack clearly met the federal definition of domestic terrorism.

“We and the grand jury allege that the defendant committed these federal hate crimes and that he committed these violent crimes to frighten and intimidate the Hispanic community,” Dreiband said.

“This hate crime may be considered an act of domestic terrorism, as have other hate crimes throughout our history, like the violence wrought by white supremacists and the Ku Klux Klan,” he added.

After announcing the charges, Bash noted the DOJ’s first mission was to fight the Klan and now the agency is facing a “resurgent threat of violence motivated by race, national origin and other categories.”

Crusius has already pleaded not guilty to a state capital murder charge in the Aug. 3 massacre — one of the nation’s deadliest shootings and the deadliest attack on Latinos in modern US history.

He has been in custody at the El Paso County Detention Facility since his arrest in August and is awaiting trial on the state capital murder charge. Federal prosecutors said they will be trying their case in parallel to the state case.

El Paso County District Attorney Jaime Esparza has said he intends to seek the death penalty. Capital murder is the most serious charge in Texas and prosecutors can use it when a defendant is accused of killing multiple victims.

“We support the indictment by the U.S. Attorney’s Office as one more way of holding the shooter accountable,” Esparza said in a statement. “The District Attorney’s Office will continue to work hard to ensure that justice is done and that the shooter is held accountable by our community.”

Authorities say the suspect drove 11 hours from his hometown of Allen, Texas, outside Dallas, to El Paso with the sole intent of killing immigrants and Mexicans in the West Texas border city.

About 20 minutes before the massacre, the suspected shooter is believed to have posted a 2,300-word manifesto, titled “The Inconvenient Truth,” in which he employed white supremacist language, stated his opposition to “race mixing” and encouraged immigrants to return to their home countries.

“This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas,” Crusius wrote, according to the indictment. “They are the instigators, not me. I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by the invasion.”

The indictment states Crusius authored the document some time before the shooting, and purchased a GP WASR-10 semiautomatic rifle and 1,000 rounds of hollow-point ammunition online on June 19 of last year.

The announcement of the federal charges comes just a few days after the six-month anniversary of the mass shooting in El Paso. The Cielo Vista Walmart reopened in November after a massive renovation and a large memorial for the victims now stands in the south end of the store’s parking lot.

Dozens of survivors continue recovering from severe physical injuries and many still see the bloodshed in the form of vivid nightmares. Numerous “El Paso Strong” banners are still in display through the city and a family put up 22 angels on their Christmas display to honor the victims.

Police said they responded to the shooting at around 6:30 a.m. Sunday at an apartment complex in the 3100 block of Cliff Creek Crossing Drive. The victim, David Damato, was found shot to the death inside a unit.

A witness who was inside the apartment told police she and Damato were woken up by glass breaking in the living room area. She said Damato grabbed his handgun and went to check what happened.

According to police, it was discovered that two suspects had broken into the apartment. Police said there was a confrontation that led to an exchange of gunfire.

Police said Damato shot one of the juvenile suspects in the torso before suspect Josiah Salinas, 19, returned fire. Salinas shot the victim several times.

It was at this time that Damante Burt, 21, and another unidentified juvenile went into the apartment. Police said the four suspects then took cash, jewelry, shoes and the victim’s gun before leaving.
